The Art of Letting Go: A Late-Summer Reset for Mind and Body

· By Sara Ajna, CCHt

August is the slow exhale of summer. The sun still lingers, but the days are already folding inward. This month carries a quiet invitation to pause, to notice what we’ve been carrying, and to release what no longer belongs with us.

In nature, nothing clings.
Rivers don’t hold on to water; they let it flow.
Trees don’t clutch last season’s leaves.
The ocean is never afraid to return waves back to the deep.

Our minds and bodies crave this same release. Yet as humans, we often hold on; memories, tensions, habits, even pain; because they feel familiar. But the truth is, what we grip too tightly eventually weighs us down.

When we hold on, it shows:

In the body, as tension in the shoulders, a clenched jaw, or restless sleep.

In the mind, as fog that blurs clarity.

In the spirit, as heaviness that blocks space for new joy and inspiration.

Holding on shapes our inner world, and just like ripples in water, it reaches outward, touching how we experience life and how we connect with others.

The Flow Practice:

Here’s a simple way to practice letting go this month:

1. Close your eyes and take three deep, slow breaths.

2. Imagine standing in a slow-moving river on a warm August afternoon.

3. Picture what you’ve been holding; stress, an old memory, self-doubt taking the shape of a smooth stone in your hand.

4. When you’re ready, let the stone fall into the water. Watch it sink, carried away by the current.

5. Feel your body soften as you let the river do its work.

Letting go is not a single act, it’s a skill, a rhythm, a choice we return to again and again. Just like the tides, we ebb and flow. Sometimes it’s gentle erosion over time, and that’s okay.

This August, I invite you to be the river. Let go of what’s heavy. Make space for what’s true.

If you feel ready to release more deeply than you’ve been able to on your own, I’d be honored to guide you. In my hypnotherapy sessions, we work together to loosen the grip of the past, dissolving patterns at their root so you can move forward feeling lighter, clearer, and free.
